Connecting Nature - Background information

WoodEurope consists of a large variety of nature areas and landscapes (ecosystems). They contribute to human well-being through recreation, health, science, sport, tourism and other outdoor activities. Ecosystems also serve to provide the basis for all economic activity including food security, vulnerability to natural disasters, energy security, and access to clean water and raw materials. Besides, all the different ecosystems provide shelter, food and mates to wildlife, which are essential for their existence. In order to find enough food during the different seasons, being able to expand their population size and exchange their genes, many species migrate or commute throughout regions or throughout Europe.

AirphotoIsolation

Because of human activities such as agriculture, deforestation, tourism, road construction, urbanization, etc. nature areas have become isolated. In isolated areas, animals are prevented from migration and forced to live in habitats not large enough to survive. The isolation of natural areas from other natural areas also led to the isolation of people from nature. An isolated nature is not sustainable and will severely affect human well-being on the long term.

Ecological networksNaturebridge

Isolated green areas have to be connected or re-connected. One useful means to do so is the establishment of ecological networks that connect green areas and provide free movement of wildlife. It is especially important and difficult through landscapes that are also used by man (farms, highways, industrial areas, cities, etc). The process of developing an ecological network implies a strong involvement of key stakeholders (farmers, citizens, landscape developers, conservationists, etc.) Together they need to find ways to connect nature areas and to ensure the sustainable future of ecosystems.
